The European Union’s Foreign Police chief Josep Borrell has warned that the Middle East is on a “cliff edge.”

Borrell told Spanish radio station Onda Cero, “We’re on the edge of the cliff and we have to move away from it.

“We have to step on the brakes and reverse gear.”

Borrell is expecting a response from Israel to the attack by Iran on Saturday evening and he is hoping that there will be no further escalation.

On Monday the British Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has urged Israel to be restrained and the French President Emmanuelle Macron warned that the Middle East is “very unstable.”

Macron told BFMTV news channel that France is urging restraint and that “we will do everything to avoid a conflagration.”

The German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has said that “we must prevent an escalation in the region.”

This comes after the UN secretary general Antonio Gurerres warned on Sunday that Middle East “is on the brink” and that conflict could end up happening “on multiple fronts.”

Guterres said, “It’s time to step back from the brink. It’s vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East. Civilians are already bearing the brunt and paying the highest price.

“We have a shared responsibility to actively engage all parties concerned to prevent further escalation.

“We have a shared responsibility to secure an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.

“We have a shared responsibility to stop violence in the occupied West Bank, de-escalate the situation along the Blue Line and re-establish safe navigation in the Red Sea.”

“We have a shared responsibility to work for peace. Regional and, indeed, global peace and security are being undermined by the hour. Neither the region nor the world can afford more war.”
