A Russian warship has opened fire on a German helicopter over the Baltic Sea which is sparking fears of an escalation in Europe.

The German Press agency in Brussels reported on Wednesday the Russian ship fired signal ammunition at the Bundeswehr military helicopter.

The helicopter was on a reconnaissance flight, and this comes as tensions between NATO and Moscow have risen in recent weeks.

The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock told officials during the NATO meeting of the incident and did not offer any further details.

Baerbock wrote on X, “Putin is attacking our peace order with hybrid attacks.” She added that Russia is using Russian ships in the Baltic to get around Western sanctions.

Last month Vladimir Putin said that NATO is now “directly” involved in the war in Ukraine after Kyiv has been authorised to use Western missiles to strike deep inside Russia.
