Starting under $22,000 (20,000 euros), Volkswagen’s new ID.EVERY1 will be its cheapest EV when it arrives in 2027. Volkswagen’s tech development boss, Kai Grunitz, says an ID.1 GT1 is possible but will depend on if enough buyers want it.

Is Volkswagen’s cheapest EV getting a GTI variant?

Volkswagen unveiled the ID.EVERY1 concept car earlier this week, previewing its upcoming entry-level electric car.

Since launching the Beetle, the German auto brand has had an affordable compact vehicle for buyers to choose from. The ID.EVERY1 is Volkswagen’s new entry-level model for the electric era.

Volkswagen will launch the production version in 2027, with a starting price of around 20,000 euros, or less than $22,000. According to Grunitz, Volkswagen’s cheapest EV could even spawn a hot GTI variant.

When asked by Autocar if an ID.1 GTI is in the works, Grunitz said, “It could because we’re using modules from the MEB platform.” However, “it depends on various factors, including the reaction of customers to this car,” VW’s tech boss explained.

Since Volkswagen is already planning to launch a GTI variant of the ID.2all, its slightly bigger entry-level EV starting at about 25,000 euro ($27,000).

Both are part of VW’s upcoming “Electric Urban Car Family” series, based on its new front-wheel-drive MEB platform. The ID.EVERY1 is expected to have a WLTP range of at least 250 km (155 miles).

At 3,880 mm long, the entry-level EV sits between the former Volkswagen Up (3,600 mm), ID.2all (4,050 mm), and Polo (4,074 mm).

Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Shafer called the ID.EVERY1 “the last piece of the puzzle” in the volume segment.

Volkswagen will launch the production version of the ID.EVERY1 in 2027, following the ID.2all, which is set to arrive next year. The new entry-level EVs will be part of nine new models rolling out by 2027, including an ID.2all SUV model.
