The Swedish authorities are preparing for the risk of war and are renovating their nuclear bunkers which is expected to take “two to three years,” which comes after German intelligence has warned Vladimir Putin could attack NATO by 2030.

Sweden has around 64,000 bunkers which can house around seven million people.

The Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) have been inspecting the bunkers some can hold thousands of people at one time.

The MSB said the shelters provides protection against shockwaves and the blast from a nuclear bomb, radioactive fallout, bomb fragments including chemical and biological weapons.

The Swedish government are investing vast amounts of money to improve the emergency services capacity to ensure they are able to full function in conflict.

The MSB said they have started work on 25 out of the 80 large bunkers and has also started to strengthen cybersecurity and stock up on medicine.

The MSB is planning to replace filters that protects people in the shelters from biological and radiological weapons this year.

In January the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said, they are “not at war but there is not peace either,” as they have been receiving hybrid attacks and sabotage in the Baltic Sea.

Sweden is also increasing their defence spending by $30 billion over the next ten years, Kristersson said last Wednesday.

The Swedish Prime Minister said, “We have a completely new security situation… and uncertainties will remain for a long time, adding this is their “biggest rearmament since the Cold War.”

The country is set to increase defence spending to 2.6% of GDP and wants to increase spending by 3.5% by 2030 from the current 2.4%.

“That is not enough,” Kristersson said.

“Our assessment is that NATO and especially European NATO countries need to take major steps in the coming years.”
