Following the massive power cut in recent days, power has now been restored in Spain and Portugal, but there is a reported knock-on effect with transport, trains and flights all reporting delays.
Given the May Bank Holiday signals the beginning of the seasonal boom for UK adults heading abroad on holiday, AllClear Travel Insurance recommends that people planning a holiday to Spain and Portugal this weekend should contact their airline or tour operator in the first instance for the latest information on delays or disruption.
With soaring temperatures this week, AllClear also recommends that all those people travelling with a medical condition take a moment to double-check the extent of medical cover that’s included with their travel policy, and to ensure they have updated their travel insurance company if there have been any changes in their health since the policy was originally purchased.
If the recent power outage disruption in Spain and Portugal results in holidaymakers changing the dates of their trip, AllClear policyholders can make contact to change cover dates to a new date that is within 30 days of the original departure date. This change will be free of charge.

Overall, the percentage of UK adults planning an overseas holiday this year is up significantly on 2024 (rising from 75% to 85%).
“Spain and Portugal remain top choices for holidays abroad this year and, for anyone about to set off on holiday this coming Bank Holiday weekend, we would encourage people to check what their travel policy covers. The soaring temperatures this week suggest now is also a good time for people to check the medical cover that’s included within their travel policies.
