On Monday morning Sicily was rocked by “explosions” as Mount Etna erupted with “strong intensity” with footage showing tourists fleeing as a huge cloud of ash rose overhead.

Tourists could be seen running to safety as Europe’s volcano started to erupt and ash has been seen in the “piano Vetore area.”

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said in a statement at 4.14 am local time that volcanic activity started and “carried on with strombolian explosions of growing intensity that, at the moment, are of strong intensity and nearly continuous.”

“Over the past few hours, the falling of a little thin ash has been flagged in the Piano Vetore area,” the institute added.

The INGV has forecast a model expecting the ash cloud to land around in a southwest direction, they warned the “values of the magnitude of the tremor are currently elevated with a tendency to increase further.”

The INGV shared thermal imaging showing “hot pyroclastic material” as rock, ash and gas is flowing down Mount Etna.

At 11.55 local time they said the volcanic flow does “not appear to have crossed the edge” of the Valley of the Lion.
