Volvo wants to sell more cars in the US. The Swedish automaker confirmed plans to launch a “new, next-generation hybrid model” as it continues to shuffle its lineup.
Volvo will build a new, next-gen hybrid in South Carolina
Volvo has big plans to revamp the brand and entice buyers in the US. It will all begin at Volvo’s plant, located just outside of Charleston, South Carolina.
After pouring $1.3 billion into the facility over the past decade, the Swedish automaker wants to make full use of its sole US plant.
Two electric vehicles are currently built at the facility: the three-row Volvo EX90 SUV and the Polestar 3. However, that will soon change.
In June, Volvo announced that it would build its best-selling vehicle, the XC60, at the facility, starting in late 2026. The XC60 will be available as both a mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which Volvo claims will offer “something for everyone in its US plant.”
After doubling down on the facility with additional investments planned, Volvo announced that another new model would be added to the lineup.
Volvo said it will add “a new next-generation hybrid model” in SC by the end of the decade. The new, next-gen hybrid is “designed to meet the specific demands of the US market,” the Swedish automaker confirmed.
“The Charleston plant is foundational to our strategic growth plan for the US,” according to Luis Rezende, Volvo Cars’ president of Americas. Rezende explained that “By adding another model into production here, we’ll take a big step toward realising the full potential of our local manufacturing investments and workforce.”
The new hybrid vehicle is part of Volvo’s strategy to gain market share by focusing on each region with custom vehicles, tech, manufacturing, and more.
Volvo also opened orders for the upgraded 2026 EX90 on Monday, which now features faster charging, added features, and increased computing power. The upgrade is also available for current 2025 EX90 owners.
