The most important companies in the global stock market come down to just 20 names — and they can wield significant influence over investors’ portfolios going into the new year, a Bank of America analysis found. Most of the S & P 500’s 16% run this year can be attributed to a select few Big Tech players, as the top 10 companies account for about 40% of the index. As 2026 approaches, Bank of America’s global quant strategy team screened for what it calls the “Most Important Stocks” – names that can sharply sway portfolio performance due to their weight. These stocks, which include Microsoft and Eli Lilly , heavily exhibit characteristics of risk, quality growth and momentum, according to the firm. These are headline factors of the companies that are driving the 2025 market rally. Strategist Nigel Tupper also ranked and grouped the stocks into three categories: “Triple momentum” plays are assessed on earnings, price and news. “Boosters rank” weighs factors that are suitable for the global economic upturn, while “steady compounders” have high and stable earnings growth, he said. Take a look at a handful of the names: Microsoft, Eli Lilly and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are the world’s most reliable earnings growers, according to the screener. Microsoft topped estimates on the top and bottom lines for its fiscal first quarter , bolstered by its Azure cloud business. Shares are up 15% in 2025. Most analysts covering the stock are bullish on the name, according to LSEG. The average price target calls for nearly 30% upside for the “Magnificent Seven” stock. Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly hit a record closing high of nearly $1,110 per share on Nov. 25 after the company crossed a $1 trillion market cap for the first time. Investors have piled into the company amid a broader rotation into health care and other cyclical parts of the market. Eli Lilly’s sales have also soared , bolstered by demand for its weight loss drug Zepbound. Wall Street generally loves Eli Lilly, with 25 out of 33 analysts rating it buy or strong buy, per LSEG. However consensus price targets only see about 1% upside from current levels. Shares have gained about 39% year to date. Other stocks with price and earnings momentum heading into next year include artificial intelligence leaders Nvidia , Advanced Micro Devices and AppLovin , Bank of America found.
