BMW revealed a few updates, offering a closer look at the upcoming electric M3 ahead of its official debut. Here’s what we know so far.
When is BMW launching the electric M3?
BMW has been hyping up its electric M-series EV since 2022. Since then, we’ve seen a few camouflaged prototypes out testing.
We knew the company was testing prototypes with four electric motors, fine-tuned driving dynamics, and advanced new software, but BMW is finally sharing a little more about what we can expect.
BMW’s M Series has been around for over 50 years, but the company promises the high-performance vehicles will soon deliver “The Ultimate Driving Machine ” experience with a fully electric drivetrain for the first time.
The new models are developed from the ground up on BMW’s new M eDrive architecture, using components from the Gen6 Neue Klasse. Each wheel is powered by an electric motor: two in the front and two on the rear axle.

BMW said the setup unlocks the benefits of both rear and all-wheel drive, with the ability to decouple the front axle.
The electric motors are controlled by M-specific software, a variation of its Neue Klasse “Heart of Joy” ECUs, and “BMW M Dynamic Performance Control.” Meanwhile, the electric drive units are “the most powerful drives BMW M has ever used,” the company said.

Although no specifics were revealed, BMW said the setup results in “a driving experience in BMW M production vehicles that has never been achieved before.”
The electric M3 will draw power from a high-voltage battery with over 100 kWh of usable energy, but again, BMW didn’t reveal an exact figure.
BMW will launch the electric M3, the first M Series EV, in 2027. Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH, said the next-gen electric M models are “set to establish a new benchmark in the high-performance vehicle segment.”
Like Hyundai’s electric “N” performance models, such as the IONIQ 5 N, BMW said the electric M EVs will offer various drive modes, simulated gear shifts, and a new soundscape.
It looks like we’ll have to wait until closer to launch for final specs and pricing. BMW’s upcoming electric M3 will square off against the Genesis GV60 Magma, the luxury brand’s first performance EV, launched in South Korea on Tuesday.
