Freehold issues open letter of solidarity with trans people across the built environment

In the letter, the board of Freehold LGBT+ CIC pledges solidarity with trans and non-binary people and says that at a time when trans rights and identities are being challenged in public discourse, businesses, organisations and individuals should “speak clearly and act boldly in support of trans inclusion, dignity and safety”.

As an organisation supporting people working in the property sector, Freehold said it recognises the importance of ensuring that every space, whether physical, professional or social, is safe, inclusive and affirming for trans and non-binary people.

The letter sets out a number of affirmations including acknowledging trans rights as human rights; recognising that trans people deserve to live, work and thrive without the fear of discrimination, harassment or exclusion; and that trans voices must be heard, respected and uplifted in boardrooms, on building sites, in policy discussions and in every aspect of the industry and society.

Alongside these affirmations, Freehold also lists practical actions it is looking to take such as creating and maintaining safe and inclusive workplaces for trans and non-binary people; educating people about gender diversity, inclusive language and the lived experiences of trans people; and challenging transphobia in all its forms.

The board said: “We recognise that silence is complicity. We choose to speak up.

“We call on colleagues, organisations and allies across the built environment and beyond to speak up publicly, challenge misinformation and stand beside trans and non‑binary people with clarity and conviction. Together, let’s ensure that our workplaces, industries and communities are places where trans people are safe, respected and celebrated.”
