Comedian and TV host Alan Carr has acquired a £3.25m Scottish castle with plans to convert the building into a “workable home” as part of a Disney+ show.

The programme will document his attempts to turn the 19th century Ayton Castle, which has 17 bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a five-storey tower, a private chapel and 106 acres of listed gardens, into a workable home.

The deal follows Carr’s victory in the latest series of The Celebrity Traitors – filmed in Ardross Castle in Ross-shire, Scotland.

“Some men when they have a midlife crisis buy a Lamborghini or grow a ponytail, but me, I want my very own castle,” Carr said.

“Since I was a boy in Northampton, I’ve always dreamt big, and have always been enchanted with the history and romance of a stately home and as I turn 50, I feel it’s my time.

“All I want is a turret to call my own – get me over that drawbridge.”
