Reform UK, Nigel Farage’s party, has made a significant commitment to reform the electoral system if it forms the next government.

Specifically, he proposes banning foreign citizens from participating in UK elections and implementing stringent regulations on postal voting, which could significantly influence the integrity of UK elections and voter trust.

This bold proposal comes after Reform UK’s defeat in the Gorton & Denton by-election, in which the Green Party of England and Wales won decisively, prompting reflection on electoral fairness and national priorities.

Farage’s frustration with this loss has prompted him to reassess the current voting framework and suggest radical changes that he believes would enhance national integrity.

Farage’s proposal to eliminate voting rights for certain Commonwealth citizens raises Questions about how this change would affect UK residents from diverse backgrounds and whether it risks disenfranchising specific voter groups.

Farage argues that allowing non-British citizens to participate in elections dilutes the essence of democracy and poses a threat to the nation’s sovereignty. He believes that when foreign citizens have a voice in UK elections, it shifts the focus of electoral debates away from pressing domestic issues and towards those influenced by international concerns.

Farage’s emphasis on preserving British citizenship and electoral integrity has sparked debate, with critics arguing that such reforms could undermine inclusivity and international relations, highlighting the need for a balanced discussion on national sovereignty and democracy.

Writing in today’s Sunday Telegraph and Mail on Sunday, Farage wrote: “For too long, postal voting has allowed our elections to be turned into a laughing stock, riddled with fraud, intimidation and outright cheating. It’s been allowed to go on for years and has poisoned trust in our democracy.

“Meanwhile, allowing non-Brits – people with zero connection to this country – vote on our future is absurd. It is right that only British citizens should be able to vote in British parliamentary elections.

“That’s why a Reform Government will immediately ban wholesale postal voting and ensure only British citizens can vote in elections in order to bring back trust to British democracy.”
