The LEGO Group is installing a large solar array at its new US factory in Chesterfield County, Virginia, as it moves toward powering the site with 100% renewable energy.
The company says construction on the solar park at LEGO Manufacturing Virginia will start this summer. The project will include more than 30,700 ground-mounted solar panels with a total capacity of 22 megawatts peak (MWp), spread across nearly 80 acres.
LEGO is also putting solar on the factory itself. Another 10,080 rooftop panels will add 6.11 MWp of capacity, boosting the site’s on-site power generation.
Taken together, the solar installations are a major step toward covering the factory’s annual electricity use with renewable energy.
The factory itself is still under construction. The main structure reached its steel “topping out” milestone in October 2025, and the office building – made from mass timber – is expected to top out later this spring.
Mass timber is designed to store carbon rather than emit it, and LEGO says using it helps cut the building’s overall environmental impact while reducing reliance on more carbon-intensive materials.
The company is also aiming for LEED Platinum certification, the highest level under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system. That would cover the building’s performance across energy, water, and waste.
LEGO says the solar project and building design are part of a broader effort to make its operations more sustainable as it expands manufacturing in the US.
