Google on Thursday said it has merged its two primary AI research units, the latest gambit by the search engine giant to wrest control of the tech industry’s hottest area. The new unit, Google DeepMind, will combine the existing Google Brain and DeepMind research groups into one team, the company said. The unit will be led by Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, which Google acquired for about $500 million in 2014. Jeff Dean, the previous head of Google Research overseeing the Google Brain team, will move to a new role as chief scientist.
