It worked to a degree, with Harry Kane scoring a consolation after the break and no further Newcastle goals conceded until Callum Wilson struck shortly after coming on, giving the Magpies a 6-1 victory to consolidate their top-four hopes and surely end Tottenham’s.
Since Stellini took charge of the club on an interim basis, following the sacking of Antonio Conte during the international break, Spurs have won just one of four games, and they were fortunate to pick up those three points against Brighton.
Conte’s former assistant has not had any form of positive impact on Spurs’ fortunes, and it remains to be seen who Daniel Levy appoints as a new permanent manager this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino appearing an increasingly strong candidate to take the Chelsea job.
However, Carragher took to social media to claim Spurs must take more immediate action and not wait until the summer to finally replace Conte.
“Tottenham are a disgrace!” Carragher tweeted.
“How have they gone to a back four for the first time this season, with [Pedro] Porro a full back that can’t defend and [Ivan] Perisic who is a winger.
“Get a proper manager in right now, not Conte’s mate.”
