The average size of a home in the UK is among the smallest in the world, with homebuyers in this country paying far more for property compared to other nations – when calculating price per square foot (sq ft).

The data, compiled by information pack provider Moverly, found that the average UK home comes in at just 818 sq ft – one of the smallest property sizes globally.

In fact, out of the other 19 nations analysed, only China, Russia and India had smaller properties on average.

Australia, on the other hand, tops the leaderboard – where the average home is 182% larger than the UK, at a spacious 2,303 sq ft.

Other sizeable spots include New Zealand (2,303 sq ft), the United States (2,164 sq ft) and Canada (1,948 sq ft) – all between 138% and 166% larger than UK homes.

In Europe, properties in the Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain also proved more generous than the UK – both in terms of price and space.

The average price of a home in the UK is currently £351 sq ft, far higher than the price of property in Germany (£236 sq ft), Canada (£218 sq ft), France (£212 sq ft), Australia (£208 sq ft), Spain (£141 sq ft) and the United States (£126 sq ft).

A map recently revealed how much a square foot of property costs in different parts of the UK, with in inner London rising to £724 sq ft – reflecting the high cost of property in the capital.

Moverly co-founder Ed Molyneux commented: “Housing delivery and just where to build is a hot topic in the UK and with space being such a valuable commodity, UK homes rank as some of the smallest when compared to many other global nations.

‌”Despite this, the UK remains home to one of the most valuable bricks and mortar property markets in the world and those looking to climb the ladder will pay considerably more when compared to many other foreign countries.”
