A climate scientist has warned that if the extreme heatwaves that Europe, China and the US are experiencing does not force governments to sort out global warming then the earth will become an “inferno.”

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that “climate change is not a warning, it’s happening.”

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that governments around the world must “act now.”

He said, “High-impact weather the planet is experiencing is likely to become more frequent and intense in years to come.

“It’s still not too late to take bold action before our planet becomes an inferno.”

In a tweet he wrote, “In many parts of the world, today is predicted to be the hottest day on record. And these records have already been broken a few times this year.

“Heatwaves put our health and lives at risk.

“The #ClimateCrisis is not a warning. It’s happening. I urge world leaders to ACT now.”

Dr Tedros’ words follow Dr Akshay Deoras, from the University of Reading’s meteorology department who said that we should expect “more frequent and intense” extreme weather events.

Before 2027 global temperatures are on track to rise by more than 1.5C, which means we are on the road to breaching the Paris Agreement which will cause “catastrophic consequences.”

Dr Deoras said, “Rising temperatures fueled by greenhouse gas emissions are turning up the heat on Europe and the rest of our planet.

“We knew early on that exceeding a 1.5°C warming would have catastrophic consequences for extreme weather events, including the scorching heatwaves we are now seeing in Spain and Italy.”

He added, “High-impact weather the planet is experiencing is likely to become more frequent and intense in years to come.

“It’s still not too late to take bold action before our planet becomes an inferno.”
