Sinéad O’Connor, the singer best known for her moving rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” has died at the age of 56, according to reports. The Irish singer’s death follows the death of her son, Shane, last year.
“Nothing Compares 2 U” was originally written by Prince, who also sang the song.
O’Connor’s version was released in 1990 and was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. The album, “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” on which the song was featured earned a Grammy award for best alternative music performance in 1991, which she notably, and historically, refused to accept. She was nominated for four Grammys that year.
O’Connor is survived by three children, according to the Irish Times, which first reported her death.
In a statement, the singer’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
O’Connor was born in Glenageary in Dublin in 1966.
