Apocalyptic wildfires are raging through a southern part of Portugal which has seen around 1,400 people including terrified tourists to be evacuated.

In the area of Odemira in the Alentejo region a huge fire is raging and firefighters are struggling to bring the wildfires under control.

Helder Guerreiro, the mayor of Odemira, said the situation was “critical, difficult and complex.”

The wildfires started on Saturday and hundreds of firefighter’s efforts are being hampered by blistering temperatures and strong winds.

The Portuguese weather agency IPMA on Monday put six districts in Portugal on “red alert” which includes Lisbon.

Civil Protection commander Jose Ribeiro said there was still a “lot of work” to do and Civil Protection secretary of state Patricia Gaspar added, “The weather conditions we are going to experience in the coming days means any small occurrence could become a big one.”
