Urban areas are definitely harder to take your driving test in with UK cities such as London, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham being the hardest. In these kinds of driving environments, high levels of traffic, complicated junctions, multi-lane roads and an abundance of signage can provide an extra challenge for learner drivers.

According to the DVSA, the number one reason for someone failing a driving test is lack of observation at junctions. This is followed by failure to check mirrors, steering control and turning right at junctions.

Learning to spot any potential hazards while behind the wheel is a critical factor when it comes to driving safely, and it is definitely something that improves the more experience you have on the road. Finding a good driving instructor for your driving lessons in London can really improve your chances of passing quickly and safely. We contacted driveJohnson’s for some top tips for taking your driving test in London.

Here are 10 tips to help you prepare for and succeed in your driving test:

  1. Familiarise yourself with the area: Spend time driving around the test centre area before your test. This will help you get used to the roads, junctions, and roundabouts.
  2. Practice parallel parking: This is a common manoeuvre in London. Find a quiet street or car park and practice parallel parking until you feel confident. Roads are often narrow and spaces very small so take your time.
  3. Limited access areas: Some areas in central London have restricted access for vehicles. Pay attention to signs and road markings. Some satnavs offer specific settings to avoid restricted areas but ensure that your satnav’s maps are up-to-date when practicing for your test.
  4. Learn the bus lane rules: Pay close attention to bus lanes, especially during restricted hours. Familiarise yourself with when you’re allowed to use them.
  5. Understand box junctions: London is full of box junctions. Make sure you understand the rules regarding entering and exiting them.
  6. Stay calm in traffic: London traffic can be challenging. Practice keeping your composure in heavy traffic and use your mirrors frequently to stay aware of your surroundings. Don’t feel pressurised from other drivers.
  7. Observe pedestrian crossings: Pay close attention to pedestrian crossings, especially zebra crossings that cross multiple lanes. Always be prepared to stop if a pedestrian is waiting to cross.
  8. Anticipate cyclists and motorcyclists: London has a large number of cyclists and motorcyclists. Keep an eye out for them using your mirrors and give them plenty of space.
  9. Practice independent driving: This is a section of the test where you follow road signs or a series of directions, without constant instruction from the examiner. Practice this skill to become more confident.
  10. Mock tests with an instructor: Consider taking mock driving tests with your instructor. This will help you get used to the test format and give you a chance to work on any weak areas. You can contact driveJohnson’s on 0330 124 4877 or visit their website for more information.

Remember, the most important thing is to stay calm and confident during your test. Take your time, follow instructions, and focus on safe driving practices.
