The German budget supermarket Aldi are switching off the lights across all stores to “reduce energy consumption” after being trialled at four shops last year.

Aldi will reduce the number of lights being left turned on across all its 966 stores this month to help their net zero efforts.

The reduction in lights not being turned on will not expected to affect shoppers’ experiences and will help to maintain cheap prices.

The budget supermarket have also announced they will install heat pumps and will have more energy-efficient LED lighting installed.

An Aldi spokesperson said that this “will reduce our energy consumption by around 10%, whilst maintaining an excellent in-store experience for our customers.

“Through measures like this we’re able to make our stores even more sustainable and maintain our position as the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket.”
