Aldi has vowed to keep sourcing all beef, pork and poultry from “British farming” despite the UK-US trade talks.
Aldi UK and Ireland’s chief executive Giles Hurley said they will drop food safety and welfare standards across their supermarkets even should regulations be eased to secure the UK-US trade deal on agriculture.
There are concerns that British food standards will be downgraded allowing chlorine washed chicken and hormone-treated beef, despite MPs insisting that British food standard will not be downgraded.
Aldi sources their meat, poultry, milk and eggs only from British farms that are Red Tractor approved.
Hurley said, “British farming is known for its high welfare, food safety and environmental standards and we know how important that is to our customers.
“That’s why 100% of our everyday fresh beef, pork and poultry is sourced from British farms, and why we’re guaranteeing that we won’t lower our standards even if others do.
“This isn’t just about food safety. It’s about protecting British farmers and doing the right thing for our customers.”
