Arsenal vs Newcastle team news
Arsenal received a huge injury boost in the build-up to the Newcastle clash as both Declan Rice and Kai Havertz returned from their respective injuries.
Rice missed last week’s draw at Liverpool with a hip issue, but Havertz’s absence has been far more protracted. He underwent hamstring surgery in February and was expected to be out through the end of the season, but has recovered quicker than expected and is available for selection again.
Leandro Trossard is a doubt as the Belgian has been dealing with a hamstring niggle, and jack-of-all-trades Mikel Merino will miss out through suspension after being shown two yellow cards against Liverpool. Also set to miss out are the long-term absentees Gabriel Maghalaes, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Gabriel Jesus.
Sven Botman is a doubt for Newcastle after he was hooked at halftime in last weekend’s home win over Chelsea with what Eddie Howe described as a minor knee issue.
Joe Willock and Kieran Trippier are set to miss out with minor injuries, though Brazilian midfielder Joelinton could return. He faces a late fitness test as he returns from a knee injury. Matt Targett (hamstring) and Lewis Hall (ankle) are both through the end of the season.
Arsenal vs Newcastle prediction
Regardless of the result, this match will be required viewing for any football fan given its implications for the top-five race. Newcastle are arguably on better form, having beaten Chelsea last time out, barely breaking a sweat as they did so, whereas the Gunners were frustrated on Merseyside.
Declan Rice and Thomas Partey will have their hands full in midfield, facing up to the imposing physical combination of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, who will likely continue to run the show despite being without their third musketeer, Joelinton. One also wonders whether Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ben White can match Tino Livramento and Jacob Murphy, whose contributions are key to Howe’s tactical setup.
Head to head (h2h) history and results
The Magpies currently hold the bragging rights in this tie, having won the reverse league fixture in November and knocked Arsenal out of the League Cup semi-finals, winning 4-0 over two legs.
