As billions of people around the world prepare for New Year’s Eve, waiting for fireworks to light up the sky, this billion-dollar business will again bring a huge profit to Chinese companies.
The country, which is the world’s leading exporter of pretty much anything, is also the number one fireworks producer, outpacing competitors by a large margin.
According to data presented by Stocklytics.com, China exports over 363,000 tons of fireworks annually, ten times more than its largest competitors combined.
China’s Fireworks Shipments Equal the Weight of 121,000 Fully Loaded Boeing 747s
Fireworks have come a long way from their beginnings in ancient China. Thanks to technological advances and growing demand for stunning displays at events like New Year’s Eve and national holidays, they have become a massive industry worth billions of dollars. Although several countries dominate this growing market, no one is even close to China, the world’s largest fireworks producer. It’s no surprise that the world’s largest exporter produces the largest amount of fireworks. However, the difference in export numbers between China and its competitors is staggering.
According to Statista and the UN Comtrade data, Chinese companies shipped more than 363,000 metric tons of fireworks across the world last year, equivalent to 121,000 fully loaded Boeing 747 airplanes or 60,500 cars. This huge figure is even more impressive when compared to the fireworks shipments of other countries.
For instance, the world’s second-largest producer, the Netherlands, shipped around 20,000 tons of fireworks last year, or 18 times less than the leading China. Far below, Germany ranked third with over 8,400 tons in fireworks shipments. Czechia, Poland and Cambodia followed with 3,700, 3,100 and 1,600 tons, respectively. Statistics show these five countries have produced and shipped ten times less pyrotechnics overseas than China alone.
The UN Comtrade data also showed that the United States is by far the largest importer of Chinese fireworks. Last year, the country imported around 120,000 metric tons of fireworks, 98% of which came from China.
Fireworks industry set to grow 33% by 2032
The joy and sense of community fireworks bring often outweigh their cost. That is why people are unlikely to cut expenses on fireworks even in financially challenging times. At the same time, the surging popularity of large-scale public shows and technological advancements in pyrotechnics will continue fueling market growth.
According to a Business Research insights survey, the global fireworks market hit a $2.7 billion value in 2024. This figure is expected to grow by an impressive 33% and hit over $3.6 billion in the next eight years.
