Philip Jansen, BT’s group chief executive bagged a £1.8 million bonus last year which comes at a time when the telecoms giant plans to cut the workforce by 55,000 by the end of the decade.

Jansen who earns £1.3 million fixed pay received his £1.8 million in cash and share awards and the bonus was a reduction from his previous £3.8 million.

BT’s profits fell by 12% to £1,7 billion this last year and also saw revenues slide and Jansen has said that he has decided to volunteer “to waive any salary increases” beyond the current financial year.

The union Prospect have said they are “deeply concerned by the scale” of the planned job cuts.

John Ferrett, its national secretary, said, “Announcing such a huge reduction in this way will be very unsettling for workers who did so much to keep the country connected during the pandemic.”
