Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna has provided the Hungarian government with a roadmap to hopefully resolve the issues of the national minorities.
On Tuesday Hungarian President Viktor Orban threatened to veto negotiations for Ukraine to join the European Union.
Political director of the Hungarian Prime Minister Balazs Orban said in an interview with the Dutch broadcaster NOS, “new laws were introduced that have worsened the lives of Hungarians in Ukraine.”
Stefanishyna said, “It was important for us that the report was impartial, and that there was no, let’s say, ‘Hungarian trace,’ as it should be objective.
“And I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the European Commission in its report confirmed the progress of Ukraine, confirmed that the rights of national minorities meet the Copenhagen criteria, which are presented to the EU member states.
“This is a very important signal for all other EU member states.”
“We have given them a detailed roadmap, as we have seen the solution of the issues raised by the Hungarian government,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
She insists the Hungarian national minority are constantly in dialogue with the government of Ukraine.
“Therefore, we call on the Hungarian side to come to an agreement and give feedback to the proposals that we have provided,” Stefanishyna said.
On Wednesday the European Commission recommended that the European Council start negotiations with Ukraine on their membership in the European Union.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that if the EU Council opens negotiations with Kyi to join the EU, then work on the process can begin immediately.
