The Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has confirmed he will hold talks with the carmaker Lotus as they are planning to quit the UK.

There has been reports the Chinese owner Geely is planning to halt manufacturing at the Hethel plant in Norfolk which will put 1,300 at risk.

However, Lotus has said they have “no plans” to close down the factory in Norfolk following a Financial Times a report the carmaker is considering to close down in the UK for the US.

Lotus said on Saturday in a statement they are “committed” to the UK as Britain and Europe is the “heart” of the company.

“Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory,” Lotus said in a statement.

“We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market.

“We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage.”

A Government spokesperson said, “The Government does not comment on speculation or the commercial affairs of private companies.”
