BYD’s latest EV leaked in China, showing a sleek shooting brake-styled electric GT. The new Song L EV GT comes just days after Mercedes-Benz revealed its first electric estate.
BYD is launching a new shooting brake EV
The Song family is BYD’s best-selling lineup. In June, BYD sold over 59,000 Song vehicles alone, led by the Song L EV, Song L DM-i (PHEV, and Song Pro DM-i.
BYD first introduced the Song L EV in 2023 at the Chengdu Motor Show with pre-sales starting in November of the same year.
After a new variant, the Song L GT, leaked in China, we are getting our first look at the new shooting brake-like version.
BYD’s new EV was released in the latest batch of NEVs approved to go on sale by China’s Ministry of Information Technology (MIIT).
Although it’s classified with other electric sedans, BYD calls the Song L EV a shooting brake electric SUV. The new GT model measures 4,840 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,560 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm.
That’s slightly bigger than the new Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake EV, introduced on Tuesday, at 4,723 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,469 mm in height.
The BYD Song L EV GT was listed with three different versions: two single-motor models and one dual-motor variant. Single-motor variants are rated with up to 228 hp (170 kW) and 308 hp (230 kW), respectively. Meanwhile, the AWD version has a combined 523 hp (390 kW).
Like most of BYD’s electric cars, the new Shooting Brake EV will use LFP batteries from its battery business, FinDreams.
The current BYD Song L EV starts at just 135,800 yuan ($19,000) with prices ranging up to 249,800 yuan ($35,000).
Following the more premium Denza N7, the new Song L GT is BYD’s second shooting brake EV. We will learn prices and final details closer to launch.
