California now has 201,180 public and shared EV charger ports available across the state — 68% more than the number of gasoline nozzles, according to the California Energy Commission (CEC).

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) made the announcement as part of the state’s ongoing zero-emission transition. The milestone follows another big update from this week — zero-emission trucks made up nearly 1 in 4 new truck sales in 2024.

“In the state of California, 94% of people now live within just 10 minutes of an EV charger,” said Newsom. “We’re proving that electric vehicles are here to stay – even as Trump sells out American innovation and jobs to China.”

EV charger ports everywhere you go

California’s public EV chargers can be found in grocery store lots, parking garages, workplaces, sports arenas, and gas stations. Shared chargers are becoming common at apartment complexes and office buildings.

These chargers add to the roughly 800,000 home chargers already installed in single-family homes statewide.

CEC Commissioner Nancy Skinner said the expanding network is making EV ownership easier than ever: “Our goal is to make driving an EV a no-brainer choice for Californians. They’re fun to drive, never need an oil change, don’t cause smog, and it’s getting easier to charge your vehicle with public EV infrastructure.”

What the state is doing next

California agencies are still pushing to speed up EV charger installation and prepare the grid for growing demand. Current efforts include grant programs to support public, workplace, and at-home chargers, especially in multifamily housing, prioritizing shovel-ready fast-charging projects, developing a Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Plan, and setting charger reliability standards.

In June, California successfully blocked the Trump Administration from withholding billions in EV charging funds approved by bipartisan majorities in Congress.

Heavy-duty charging expands, too

The state also announced 20,093 charging and hydrogen fueling points for medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles, up 23% since February.

While trucks make up just 6% of California’s vehicles, they’re responsible for 35% of transportation emissions and 25% of on-road greenhouse gases. Building out charging and fueling for this sector is crucial for hitting the state’s climate goals.
