Norris, previously appointed the minister for local growth and democracy, replaces Ali after she was forced to quit the building safety minister’s role and brief following criticism for attending a conference sponsored by a firm related to the Grenfell disaster.

Norris has experience in building safety before the Labour government came to power, having served as the shadow fire minister.

During a debate on building safety and resilience last month, Norris said: “We will demand responsibility for building safety—responsibility from this government and responsibility across the industry”.
