Travel disruption plagued summer get-aways last year from industrial strikes to cancelled flights and staff shortages, which left many travellers stranded or missing flights and connections.

According to a new survey of 1,000 UK holidaymakers by Opinium for Multitrip.com, a specialist travel insurance provider, over a third (37%) of holidaymakers incorrectly say travel disruption, e.g., an event outside your control like earthquakes and strikes, is covered by all travel insurance policies and 29% do not know if it is included or not.

Christian Bennett from Multitrip.com, said, “Regular travel insurance generally does not provide cover in the event of strikes, adverse weather and natural disasters.

“When it comes to cancelled flights, whilst European airlines are obliged to refund or rearrange cancelled flights this doesn’t cover customers for lost accommodation costs, or other irrecoverable travel expenses, such as event tickets or car hire costs.”

He added, “We understand the impact cancelled flights due to strikes and adverse weather conditions can have on travel plans.

“Our Travel Disruption add-on gives extra coverage up to £1,000 for additional or irrecoverable accommodation and travel expenses if a flight is cancelled. This will ensure customers are provided with an extra level of protection in the event their flight is cancelled.”
