European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has suggested that the next generation in the UK are on the “direction of travel” to reverse Brexit.

This has been denied by No 10 Downing Street after von der Leyen told an event in Brussels that the younger generation in the UK will put Britain back on the path to rejoin the EU.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman was asked if Rishi Sunak agrees with this, he said, “No. It’s through our Brexit freedoms that we are, right now, considering how to further strengthen our migration system.

“It is through our Brexit freedoms we are ensuring patients in the UK can get access to medicines faster, that there is improved animal welfare.

“That is very much what we are focused on.”

Since Lord Cameron has returned back to the government’s Cabinet as the Foreign Secretary he has called for the UK and the EU to be a “friend, a neighbour and the best possible partner,” which has caused much unease among many politicians.

Rishi Sunak’s press secretary stressed, “We have a Prime Minister that championed Brexit before it was in his career interest to do so because he believes in it passionately.

“We are very focused on making a success of it.”

When asked if Brexit was in peril, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman replied with a firm, “No.”

Asked if the UK could ever rejoin the EU, von der Leyen said in Brussels, “I must say, I keep telling my children: ‘You have to fix it. We goofed it up, you have to fix it.’

“So I think here too, the direction of travel my personal opinion is clear.”
