Russia and Belarus are preparing to hold joint air force exercises and both countries are continuing to build up joint military grouping.

The Belarusian Defence Ministry said that by creating a joint force this will “strengthening the protection and defence of the Union State,” of both Russia and Belarus.

The Defence Ministry said in a statement, “Personnel, weapons, military and special equipment of the armed forces of the Russian Federation will continue to arrive in the Republic of Belarus.”

They added, the joint air force exercises are part of a plan to “increase the level of combat training of aviation units.”

All males who are aged between 18 and 60 are being told they “Must come to an enlistment office.”

A Belarusian journalist Hanna Liubakova said despite the call up there is no sign of the “beginning of real mobilisation” at the moment, but this cannot be ruled out just yet.

Liubakova, who is a non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council thinktank, told Newsweek, “The announcement at a bus station is new yet it looks like another way of dragging people to enlistment offices.”

She suggested that the enlistment has most likely been extended, because in December, “propaganda and various ads appeared with posters and videos calling for men to turn up to enlistment offices for the checkups.

“It can be interpreted as potential preparation for future mobilisation.

“However, today there are no signs of the beginning of real mobilisation in Belarus, although we can’t exclude such a scenario.”
