As Storm Ciaran is fast heading to the south of England ferry services have been cancelled as the Met Office has issued a red weather warning for the Channel Islands.

The Met Office has said that strong winds of 85mph are expected to hit the Channel Islands today and in the English Channel gusts of 110mph are expected.

DFDS has suspended all services between Newhaven in East Sussex along with Dieppe in France.

Condor Ferries has cancelled all routed for Wednesday and Thursday between the Channel Islands.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for London and south east England and strong winds could disrupt travel, utilities and there could be some structural damage caused by Storm Ciaran.

The Met Office said on Wednesday, “On Thursday morning very strong west to southwesterly winds will develop over parts of the far south and southeast of England where gusts are likely to reach 70-80 mph in some coastal areas and may exceed 85 mph in a few of the most exposed English Channel coastal spots.

“The extent of these high winds remains a little uncertain and is dependent on the exact track of Storm Ciarán with parts of Sussex and Kent most likely to see gusts of this magnitude.

“Winds will begin to ease from the west during the afternoon. Very large waves could bring additional impacts to coastal areas, especially along the English Channel coastline.”
