We get a first look at Tesla’s new paint color launching on the updated Model Y: Glacier Blue. Dope or nope?

Last week, Tesla unveiled the mid-cycle refresh of the Model Y in China, and a select few markets were supplied by Tesla’s factory in Shanghai, such as Australia and the Philippines.

The first deliveries in China are expected to start in March – pending regulatory approval. The new Model Y hasn’t been launched in Europe or North America yet, but it is expected to happen in the coming months.

We already cover most design changes and new features coming to the updated Model Y, which is the world’s best-selling car, but there’s another new feature that is not necessarily linked to the update that we haven’t discussed much: Glacier Blue.

Tesla is notorious for not making many colors available on its new vehicles. Its logic is that limiting the number of color options streamlines its ordering process, removes production complexity, and makes it easier to match inventory vehicles to new orders.

But it also led some people to complain about the lack of diversity in color options, with Tesla rarely offering more than 5 or 6 color options. However, it did result in creating a significant wrap aftermarket for Tesla vehicles.

Now, with the new Model Y in China, Tesla has launched a new color called “Glacier Blue”:

It is a much lighter blue than Tesla’s ‘deep blue metallic’ currently offered on vehicles outside of China.

But it has now been spotted coming out of Tesla’s factory in Shanghai, and it looks even lighter than on the configurator renders (via xiaoteshushu):

Electrek’s Take

It’s not my syle, but I understand the appeal. The Hyundai Kona EV also had a similar color that was popular – to my surprise.

Color aside, I want to talk about the new Model Y’s rear. I think it looks much worse than the previous version, especially with a license plate, which I have so far seen only installed at the bottom, which accentuates the large empty space underneath the lightbar.

I’m not a fan. The front-end is OK. I think the Model 3’s new front-end works better, but I don’t mind the new one on the Model Y. But the rear doesn’t work for me. What do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.
