Friday’s big stock stories: What’s likely to move the market in the next trading session

Here’s what CNBC TV’s producers were watching as stocks sold off on Thursday, and what’s on the radar for the next session. The markets and the Trump administration Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be on ” Squawk Box ” in the 7 a.m. hour. CNBC anchors Becky Quick, Joe Kernen and Andrew Ross Sorkin will ask him about everything going on right now including his thoughts about the market’s recent drop. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is now down 2.1% since the beginning of President Donald Trump ‘s second term. It is up roughly 0.9% since the election. The S & P 500 is down 4.3% since the inauguration. It is down 0.8% since the election. The Nasdaq Composite is down about 8% since Inauguration Day. It is down 2% since the election. The Nasdaq 100 is down 6.5% since Inauguration Day. It is down about 0.9% since the election. Fifteen of the Nasdaq 100 stocks are down double digits in 2025. The Russell 2000 is down 9.2% since the inauguration. The index is down 8.6% since the election. .IXIC YTD mountain Nasdaq Composite in 2025 More on the markets Liz Young Thomas of SoFi was on ” Closing Bell ” with CNBC’s Scott Wapner on Thursday. She said of the market: ”It’s chaos.” She made the point that ”it isn’t just the market — it is the data, the data is concerning.” So bring on the jobs report “Squawk Box” will have that information at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones are calling for a gain of 170,000 jobs . The private payrolls report from ADP and layoffs data from Challenger, Gray and Christmas both painted a pretty bleak jobs picture this week. Bonds The 10-year Treasury note is now yielding 4.27%. The 2-year Treasury note yields 3.95%. The 1-year Treasury bill is yielding 4.04%. The six-month T-bill yields 4.25%. The three-month T-bill is yielding 4.33%. The one-month T-bill yields 4.4%. The Fidelity Corporate Bond ETF (FCOR) has a dividend yield of 4.35%. The SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) has a dividend yield of 6.6%. The iShares 0-5 Year High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (SHYG) has a dividend yield of 7.01%. The iShares iBoxx High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) has a dividend yield of 5.85%. The KraneShares Asia Pacific High Yield Bond ETF (KHYB) has a dividend yield of about 10.2%. The BondBloxx B Rated USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (XB) has a dividend yield of 7.34%. US10Y YTD mountain U.S. 10-year Treasury yield in 2025 Fed Chair Jerome Powell We’ll hear from him at 12:30 p.m. on ” Halftime Report ” with Scott Wapner on Friday. He’s a market mover, don’t miss it. Mergers and acquisitions Speaking of “Halftime Report,” trader Bryn Talkington said on Thursday: ”Mergers might not be so good if they’re taking jobs away, which this administration might not want.” The NYLI Merger Arbitrage ETF (MNA) , which tracks takeover targets, hit a high on Thursday. Apollo Global is 29% from the December high. It fell 4.1% Thursday. KKR is 32% from the January high. It dropped 5.6% Thursday. Ares Management is 23.5% from the February high. It fell 5.9% Thursday. ARES 5D mountain Ares Management in the past five trading days Consumer discretionary The sector dropped 2.9% on Thursday. It is the worst performing sector of 2025, down about 10.3%. Deckers Outdoor is down 35% in 2025. Tesla is the second biggest loser, down 34.8% year to date. Norwegian Cruise Line is down 22% year to date. Ulta Beauty is down 18.4% in 2025. Carnival , Chipotle , and Las Vegas Sands are next on the list, along with Caesars . The casino stock is down 13 straight days. That’s a tough losing streak. Caesars has lost 28% in those 13 days. Crypto and our nation’s capital CNBC TV’s Emily Wilkins looks at what’s next for Congress and crypto rules. Also, crypto leaders are meeting at the White House — and CNBC’s MacKenzie Sigalos has that part of the story. Bitcoin is up 29% since the election, but down 18% since inauguration day. Ether is down 12% since the election, down 37% since inauguration day. XRP is up nearly 380% since the election, down 23% since inauguration day. Solana is down 18% since the election, down 50% since inauguration day. The CoinDesk 20 index is up nearly 40% since the election, down 31% since inauguration day. BTC.CM= YTD mountain Bitcoin in 2025 The final frontier Intuitive Machines landed a spacecraft on the moon on Thursday. It seems like it didn’t go 100% as planned , but let’s be honest: Space travel is hard. As CNBC TV’s Morgan Brennan reported, the stock fell hard, too. It fell 20%. The stock is down 55% from the high reached on Jan. 24 and down 41% in a month. Morgan Brennan will be following this story closely on Friday. This comes after Firefly Aerospace had a successful landing over the weekend. Separately, Howmet Aerospace fell 4.5% Thursday. It’s down 11.4% from the mid-February high. BWX Technologies dropped 3.5% Thursday. It is 26% from the November high. CACI International fell 1% on Thursday. It is 39% from the 52-week high.
