Genesis designers crafted a luxury electric pickup to go head-to-head with the Tesla Cybertruck, but those plans were later shelved. New images reveal the EV pickup was nearly complete, but it was later set aside to focus on other models. Will Genesis bring it to life?

Is Genesis launching a luxury electric pickup?

An all-electric Genesis pickup would be something. The latest issue (276) of Auto&Design magazine uncovers the story behind the luxury brand’s “unseen” EV pickup, revealing it was more than just a design study.

Genesis designed the electric pickup specifically for the American market, where trucks like the Ford F-Series dominate.

The project is one of four yet to be seen by the public and the only one without an official name. Genesis designers simply called it “the pickup.”

Luc Donckerwolke, the luxury brand’s chief creative officer, tossed up the idea, saying, “An electric pickup? Why not?” However, the project was later set aside “because we had to focus on different projects,” Donckerwolke explained.

The electric pickup was more than just a design study, with new images revealing detailed sketches and nearly complete models that share the off-road styling with the X Gran Equator Concept.

Unlike its other vehicles with a monocoque chassis, the electric pickup featured a body-on-frame construction for improved off-road capability.

Although the project was shelved, the magazine suggests that Genesis may reveal a concept based on the design in the near future.

In the meantime, Genesis has its hands full with several new vehicles arriving over the next few years. The luxury brand introduced its first high-performance vehicle, the GV60 Magma, earlier this month.

Despite another delay, the flagship GV90 SUV is still expected to launch by the end of 2026. Genesis is set to introduce its first hybrid and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), starting later this year. Looking ahead, a luxury off-road SUV based on the X Gran Equator Concept (shown above) is expected to arrive in 2027.

Will Genesis revisit “the pickup?” If it did, would you buy one over a Tesla Cybertruck? Let us know in the comments.
