Kyiv has requested for NATO allies to intercept missiles and drones being launched to hit and destroy targets in Ukraine.

The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this is “out of the question” to intercept Russian missiles flying over Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenksy is asking for NATO allies to protect Ukrainian airspace as they did with Israel when Iran fired dozens of missiles and drones in April.

President Zelensky said, “By defending Israel, the free world demonstrated that unity (among allies) is not only possible but 100% effective.

“The allies’ decisive actions prevented the success of terrorism and loss of infrastructure and forced the aggressor to cool down. The same can be done to defend Ukraine from terrorism, and Ukraine, just like Israel, is not a NATO member.”

The outgoing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg echoed a similar sentiment to the German Chancellor.

Last week Stoltenberg said, “NATO will support Ukraine, and we have now increased our support…But NATO’s policy is unchanged – we will not be involved in this conflict.”

“So we support Ukraine in the destruction of Russian aircraft, but NATO will not be directly involved,” he added.

However Poland is the only NATO country who is considering the idea of shooting down Russian missiles flying over Ukraine.

On 8 July Poland and Ukraine signed a bilateral security treaty for a “mechanism” to intercept Russian missiles, but to date no firm decision has been made as NATO would have to agree.
