If you haven’t used one yet, a Digital Key is life-changing. It should be a given on all new vehicles nowadays. GM is finally asking a select group of EV owners to test the new feature.
GM begins Digital Key tests for EV owners
Tesla first introduced its digital key for the Tesla Model 3 in 2017, eight years ago. Some automakers are still living in the stone ages, including GM. That will soon change.
GM invited several Cadillac EV owners to take part in an exclusive digital key beta program. According to the email sent to owners, those who enroll will receive an over-the-air (OTA) software update to enable the digital key.
The feature lets you lock, unlock, and drive your vehicle directly from your smartphone or smartwatch. Let’s be honest, we are all attached to our phones these days, so having your car key on it just makes more sense.
The email was sent to 2026 Cadillac Optic and Lyriq owners, but the fine print states the feature is “available on properly equipped 2025 model year or newer GM vehicles.”

To use it, you will need at least an iPhone 11 or Apple Watch Series 6, or a Google Pixel 6 Pro or 6 XL, or a newer model. You will also need an active OnStar service plan.
Those who sign up for the beta test will receive support resources from GM tailored to their vehicle and experience.
In June, Apple announced several new auto brands would soon offer Apple Wallet digital keys, including GM’s Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac.
The rollout appears to be kicking off with new Cadillac EV owners, but it is expected to be available for Chevy and GMC models soon.

It’s almost 2026, and GM still doesn’t offer a digital key. Nearly every automaker, including Tesla, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Rivian, etc. The list goes on and on.
Most vehicles that don’t offer it nowadays are either older models or entry-level trims stripped of features. That’s not the case for GM, where Cadillac owners are just gaining access to the feature.
GM did start handing out a physical key card with the 2025 Cadillac Lyriq, but when will we see a digital version widely available across its lineup? With beta testing now underway, let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later. GM claims Cadillac is the luxury EV leader in the US, but if it falls behind Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, and others advancing new tech and software, staying on top won’t be easy.
