Despite fewer models sold in the fourth quarter, GM outpaced Ford to remain the #2 EV seller in the US, behind Tesla.
GM EV sales rise in 2025 despite Q4 drop
As expected, GM reported lower EV sales in the final three months of 2025 after the $7,500 federal tax credit expired at the end of September.
The Detroit-based automaker sold just 25,219 electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2025, 43% fewer than the nearly 44,000 in Q4 2024.
GM said the lower EV sales were due to the surge of buyers that pulled forward demand ahead of the expiration of the federal tax credit.
Despite the Q4 drop, GM maintained its position as the second-best EV seller in the US, with nearly 170,000 electric models sold in 2025, up 48% year over year.
The higher sales are thanks to GM’s diverse lineup of electric vehicles across the Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac brands. GM claimed Cadillac was the best-selling luxury EV brand after sales rose 69% in 2025. However, that doesn’t include Tesla.
Cadillac now offers a complete lineup of luxury electric SUVs, including the entry-level Optiq, midsize Lyriq, three-row Vistiq, Escalade IQ, and even larger Escalade IQL. The luxury brand recorded its best retail sales since 2007 in 2025.
Chevy notched its fourth consecutive year with higher retail sales, the only mainstream brand to do so. Like Cadillac, Chevy’s growth is largely thanks to its growing EV lineup.
The Chevy Equinox EV remained one of the top-selling electric vehicles in the US with nearly 57,945 models sold in 2025.
Although we’ll have to wait for all the numbers to be released, the Equinox EV was likely among the top five best-selling EVs in 2025 after beating out the Hyundai IONIQ 5 (47,039) and Honda Prologue (39,194).
Other Chevrolet electric models, including the Silverado EV and Blazer EV, contributed to the higher retail sales. GM sold 22,637 Chevy Blazer EVs and 11,275 Silverado EVs in 2025
Chevy is launching the new Bolt EV in Q1 with a starting price of $29,990. The new Bolt will go up against its old rival, the Nissan LEAF, as one of the most affordable EVs in the US. Nissan’s LEAF received a major refresh for the 2026 model year, with more range (up to 303 miles), a new crossover SUV design, and a built-in NACS port.
