Google said Thursday that it will be removing Canadian news on its feeds when a law requiring payment takes effect. In a blog post, Kent Walker, head of global affairs, said Canada’s recently passed Online News Act, which would require tech companies to pay news outlets for linking to content, posed structural issues that Google did not believe could be resolved by regulatory processes. “As a result, we have informed the [Canadian] government that we have made the difficult decision that when the law takes effect we will be removing links to Canadian news from our Search, News, and Discover products and will no longer be able to operate Google News Showcase in Canada,” Walker said. said it was ending news sharing in Canada because of the law.
