British military chiefs are warning the world is on the brink of a major war and the UK must prepare for global conflict.
The Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Roly Walker is warning that the UK has to be ready for war within three years.
General Walker is strongly urging the government to invest more into the military and build up a stronger deterrence.
Other senior military ranks have warned that it is possible that citizens may be called on by the government or the Ministry of Defence to provide support should war break out.
General Walker said in a rare speech to defence leaders and senior military ranks that the UK is facing a “convergence of threats.”
He warned that war could break out between 2027 and 2028 unless the West steps up quickly with putting more money into defence for a strong deterrence.
He warned of Russia’s war in Ukraine, China eyeing Taiwan, North Korea with their weapons testing in preparation for possible conflict and Iran with their nuclear programme, all of this creates a dangerous prospect.
The Shadow Defence Minister Baroness Goldie has told the government to start considering conscription into the British Army as a large number of European countries have already introduced the programme in preparation for war.
Baroness Goldie warned the government that there is an “immediate threat” that General Walker has highlighted.
Speaking in the House of Lords, she said, “The threat that we are facing is immediate. Other countries, recognising that urgency, have taken steps to engage their public through a range of measures.
“From conscription at one end to seeking volunteers aged 18 and over for military training — as in France and Germany — at the other end.
“I think what this Chamber wants to know is what imminent steps will the Government take to educate the British public now about the gravity of the situation and to put the UK on to a comparable readiness footing to these other countries.”
Earlier this month professor Anthony Glees warned that 2026 will be “make or break” as the UK Armed Forces are facing an arms race, and the government must step up.
Prof Glees said the Ministry of Defence has to “prepare for war with Putin’s Russia sooner rather than later.”
He told the Express, “We need to ensure we are fighting fit for what 2026 is likely to throw at us.
“We need to spend vast amounts on building up a peace arsenal that Putin will find daunting.”
Former Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood, who is also a Lt. Colonel, warned the UK could “easily be at war with Russia in the next five years.”
Ellwood warned, “We are still in a naïve place because we have failed to admit that Russia is already in a Gray zone war with us.
We are vulnerable as a society in terms of our national infrastructure, cybersecurity, cyber attacks, and disinformation. We need people ready to bolster stockpiles of artillery shells and things like that.”
