The UK will see further changeable weather this week, with spells of heavy and persistent rain and drier, brighter interludes, before cooler air moves in from the north.
The Met Office has issued Yellow warnings for rain for the southwest Scotland, southern Wales and southwest England on Tuesday as bands of rain move across the country from the southwest.
Further warnings may be issued so it is important to keep up to date with the forecast.
In southern Wales, 60-80mm could accumulate over south facing hills and 30-50mm more widely across the warning area through the day, accompanied by strong southerly winds.
In Devon and Cornwall, heavy rain will also be accompanied by the strong southerly winds.
Accumulations of 20-40mm are expected quite widely, with up to 70mm building up in the wettest spots, these most likely but not exclusively, on the south facing slopes of the moors.
Southwestern parts of Scotland are likely to see 20-40mm of rain quite widely, with a few places perhaps seeing in excess of 60mm by the end of the day.
Met Office Chief Forecaster, Neil Armstrong, said, “The UK is in for an unsettled week of weather, with frequent spells of heavy rain and at times strong, gusty winds.
“Given recent wet weather and saturated ground in places, this could lead to some flooding. Difficult travelling conditions are also expected, with delays and the increased possibility of accidents.
“There will be spells of drier and brighter weather at times, and temperatures will begin to fall closer to average for the time of year from the north.
“We will see a return of below freezing temperatures in Scotland overnight, with even the chance of some snow over mountains on Wednesday night.”
The forecaster said that by Wednesday night, much of Scotland will be in cooler air moving in from the north.
This will bring below freezing overnight temperatures, as well as the risk of some snow over higher ground. Those across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as lower levels in most of Scotland, will continue to see precipitation falling as rain.
By the weekend much of the UK will be under the cooler airmass with overnight frosts in places, and while there will still be some showers around it’ll be a much drier and brighter spell of weather. The main exception is in the south and southwest, where it may still be somewhat cloudier and milder with some patchy rain for a time, before this eventually clears.
