With new EV models from virtually every brand rolling out, electric vehicle sales in the US reached a record 1.3 million last year. Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 remained at the top, but new Honda and GM models quickly climbed the sales charts. Check out the top 10 best-selling EVs in the US for 2024 below.

What were the top 10 best-selling EVs in the US for 2024?

Over 2.5 million electric cars have been sold in the US over the past 48 months. According to the latest Kelley Blue Book estimates, EV sales surged in the fourth quarter, with 365,824 units sold, a 15% jump from Q4 2023.

In 2024, 1.3 million EVs were sold in the US, up 7.3% year over year (YOY). Electric vehicles accounted for 8.1% of total auto sales last year, up from 7.8% in 2023.

The report notes that “excellent new products” like the Honda Prologue and new GM electric models fueled the growth. Combined, GM and Honda sold nearly 80,000 more EVs last year than in 2023.

Other brands, including Hyundai, Kia, and Ford, also set new sales records due to higher demand and strong promotions.

Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 remained the best-selling EVs in the US in 2024 by a wide margin, accounting for over 40% of total sales.

After its best sales quarter since launching in Q4, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E finished third on the sales charts. The Mach-E was the best-selling non-Tesla EV, with 51,745 models sold in 2024.

The fourth-place winner was the Hyundai IONIQ 5. Last year, 44,400 units were sold, up 31% from 2023.

The upgraded 2025 IONIQ 5 is now rolling out of Hyundai’s new EV plant in Georgia. For the first time, the electric SUV qualifies for the $7,500 federal tax credit.

Tesla’s Cybertruck beat out the Ford F-150 Lightning for fifth with nearly 39,000 models sold. Ford Lightning sales were still up 39% YOY, with over 33,500 electric trucks sold in 2024.

Top 10 best-selling EVs in the US of 2024 (*Kelley Blue Book estimates)

With over 15 new EVs expected to hit the market, Cox Automotive expects EV sales in the US to continue climbing in 2025. Expanding charging options and strong incentives are expected to push electric vehicle market share to around 10% of total US auto sales this year, paving the way for another record.

Electrek’s Take

One thing is certain: EVs continue to see higher US demand. With a wave of new models arriving, expect even more growth in 2025.

As my editor-in-chief, Fred Lambert pointed out, KBB estimates that Tesla sales were up over 3,000, which is a mistake.

Although Tesla’s numbers may not be exact, this likely doesn’t impact the top 10 list. Which EV will come out on top in 2025? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
