Volkswagen’s best-selling model of all time is going electric. The first image of the upcoming Volkswagen Golf EV reveals a fresh new look.
Volkswagen Golf EV previewed for the first time
Since launching its first all-electric production vehicle in 2013, the e-up! The Volkswagen Group has now delivered four million EVs, but Europe’s largest automaker has much more to come over the next few years.
Volkswagen is preparing for a new generation of electric vehicles, starting with the ID. Polo next month, followed by the ID. Polo GTI, ID. Cross, ID. Tiguan, and two more EVs in 2026. After that, Volkswagen will launch the ninth-generation Golf, available in both EV and ICE powertrains.
German trade union IG Metall offered a sneak peek of the upcoming Golf EV to Volkswagen workers during a works council meeting at its Wolfsburg facility on Wednesday.
While it’s still clearly a Golf, the shadowy image reveals a few updates compared to the current model, including a large roof spoiler and more aerodynamic profile.
The electric Golf will ride on VW’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is being developed through its partnership with Rivian.
By integrating Rivian’s software, vehicles built on the 800V platform will offer more advanced in-car features and can be updated through over-the-air (OTA) updates.
The interior will likely be based on Volkswagen’s latest design, which will debut on the upcoming ID. Polo (pictured above), featuring a 10.25″ driver display, 13″ touchscreen navigation, and physical buttons for climate control, volume, and more.
According to Autocar, Volkswagen will launch the ninth-generation Golf in 2028 with both EV and ICE powertrain options.
However, previous reports suggest it’s being pushed back until closer to 2030. It will continue to be built at the Wolfsburg plant.
