Lexus says the LS no longer stands for a luxury SUV or sedan, but rather for “Luxury Space.” The new Lexus LS is a 6-wheeled ultra-luxe EV people mover — but why does it even exist?

Meet the 6-wheeled Lexus LS Concept

At the Japan Mobility Show, Toyota revealed plans for five unique brands, including a new ultra-luxe Century brand that will sit above Lexus.

So, where does that leave Lexus in Toyota’s lineup? According to Toyota’s chief branding officer, Simon Humphrey, the new high-end Century brand will give Lexus more freedom to create and “take on new challenges as a pioneer.”

Apparently, that includes two extra wheels. After unveiling the new 6-wheeled LS Concept at the event, Humphrey said, “Lexus has always been about more than just four wheels.”

The LS no longer stands for Luxury Sedan nor Luxury SUV, but rather a Luxury Space, Toyota’s branding chief explained.

Since the LS was introduced in 1989, the rules of a luxury market have changed dramatically, Humphrey said, adding, “Once upon a time, executive sedans ruled the automotive world.” Now, buyers are shifting to SUVs, but they also want different experiences, more space, and maximum efficiency.

Humphrey said the six-wheel design maximizes floor space, adding, “Space is freedom, and space is privacy. Two commodities that are simply priceless.”

The six-wheel design followed Lexus’s attempts to create more interior space. Adding the sixth wheel provided additional support to move the vehicle while still allowing three or more passengers to fit comfortably.

It’s also based on the Lunar Cruiser, a 6-wheeled lunar rover that Toyota is co-developing with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

During the event, Toyota’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, said, “Will the six-wheeled vehicles that Toyota makes only be driven on the moon?” He added, “As engineers, you should make it possible for six-wheeled vehicles to be driven on roads all over the world.”

Toyoda said he didn’t know if the company could do it yet, but the Lexus LS is “more than just a concept.” Toyoda said at the event, “We are currently developing this car. There are many areas that need to be improved and polished, but we are developing it seriously, as if we were bringing a development car to JMS.”
