Electric vehicles continued to outpace the overall US auto market in March as buyers scooped up savings before higher prices, thanks to Trump’s tariffs, take effect. New models, including the Honda Prologue and Chevy Equinox EV, are driving sales growth in the US.

The latest data from S&P Global Mobility shows that new EV registrations in the US surged by 20% in March, with 115,758 units sold.

In comparison, total light vehicle registrations rose 14% to 1.54 million. Excluding hybrids, purely electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for 7.5% of the US light vehicle market, up from 7.1% last year.

Tesla remained the top-selling brand with over 51,000 registrations, up 1.1% from March 2024 after two months of lower numbers.

According to the report (via Automotive News), Tesla Model 3 registrations soared 157% to 18,686 in March while Model Y registrations slipped 24% to 28,108. Tesla said supply shortages impacted sales during the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the higher sales were led mainly by new models, including the Honda Prologue, Acura ZDX, and Chevy Equinox EV.

GM’s Chevy surpassed Ford to become the second-best-selling EV brand after registrations surged 274% to nearly 8,500. Ford’s EV registrations fell 13% to 7,361.

Chevy is not the only GM brand that notched significant growth in March. Cadillac’s registrations were up 86%, placing it at number 7. GM’s luxury brand now has four EV models: the Cadillac Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ.

In the first quarter, GM sold 10,329 electric Chevy Equinox and another 6,187 Blazer EV models. Honda reported Prologue sales reached 9,561 in Q1, while Acura sold 4,813 ZDX electric SUVs.

In its Q1 sales report last month, Cox Automotive said, “Despite many obstacles — and what you may read elsewhere — electric-vehicle sales continue to grow at a healthy pace in the US market.” However, with Trump’s auto tariffs and likely end of federal EV incentives, “the rest of 2025 will be a volatile one for EV sales in the US,” Cox added.

Since many popular electric vehicles, including the Chevy Equinox EV, Honda Prologue, and Ford Mustang Mach-E, are built in Mexico, they could soon face higher prices.

Earlier this month, a Ford spokesperson told Electrek that the company plans to raise Mustang Mach-E prices on vehicles imported after May 2. These vehicles are expected to arrive at dealerships in late June. The spokesperson did not specify how much the prices would go up.

While the incentives are still here, Honda and Chevy are offering steep discounts on EV models. Both are available to lease for under $300 a month right now. You can use our links below to find deals on top-selling EVs near you.
