It’s a huge chance for both nations to end their long runs without an appearance in the last four of a major international tournament, with the Dutch having not done so for a decade and their opponents having last achieved the feat back in 2008.
The Netherlands got their campaign firmly back on track following a shock defeat by Austria that condemned them to third spot in a difficult Group D, with Donyell Malen’s brace and another goal – and stylish assist – from Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo seeing them brush aside surprise Group E winners Romania 3-0 in Munich on Tuesday night.
Vincenzo Montella’s men had earlier finished as runners-up to Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in Group F following a last-gasp win over the Czech Republic.
