A recent report out of South Korea states that Hyundai Motor Group is beginning development of a new hydrogen fuel cell EV supercar based on its N Vision 74 concept from a couple of years ago. The Korean automaker is working on a development mule ahead of planned production in 2026.

The public got its first glimpse at the N Vision 74 Concept in the summer of 2022 when Hyundai launched the IONIQ 6. The reveal came in the form of an exciting video on a track, complete with drifting footage of the N 74 and an N version of the IONIQ.

The N Vision 74 is merely a concept but brilliantly blends the future of hydrogen fuel cell technology with the retro style of the past, borrowing several design elements from the Hyundai Pony built in Korea from 1975 to 1990, more specifically, a Pony coupe concept from 1974. Here are some details Hyundai shared about the N Vision 74 concept at the time:

Hyundai’s engineers developed a hybrid structure of a battery-electric in combination with an FCEV system, which is placed in an all-new layout. By having fuel cell system and battery-electric powering the N Vision 74 together, the cooling efficiency is improved, while the two different power sources can be used depending on different driving conditions. This fine-tuned logic system enables better torque vectoring by twin motors on the rear, allowing a precise and responsive cornering experience. Moreover, N Vision 74 explores the balance between the performance and cooling with a three-channel cooling system.

According to Hyundai, the Vision 74 is built on the most advanced hydrogen fuel cell system that the N brand has ever created. Here are some of its specs:

L / W / H / Wheelbase 4,952 mm / 1,995 mm / 1,331 mm / 2,905 mm
Max Power over 500 kW (rear)
Max Torque over 900 Nm (rear)
Battery Capacity 62.4 kWh / 800V capability
Tank Capacity 4.2 kg
Fuel Cell Stack net 85 kW (Max 95 kW)
Refueling Time 5 minutes
Max Speed over 250 km/h (~155 mph)
Range over 600 km (373 miles)

While we won’t see this exact concept on roads someday, Hyundai Motor Group appears to be starting the development of a mass-produced passenger version it’s targeting for a launch in 2026.

The Hyundai N Vision 74 may come to reality… for $366k

According to a recent report from Korean news outlet KED Global, Hyundai Motor Group’s suppliers have been performing R&D on potential components in the N Vision 74 since January. According to an official for one of HMG’s suppliers, it is targeting July to complete the parts manufacturing ahead of deliveries to Hyundai.

Hyundai, in turn, will use the components to build a developmental mule of the fuel cell EV later this year before moving on to prototyping and pilot phases ahead of mass production and sales. While the new FCEV based on the N Vision 74 concept will be “mass-produced,” those numbers will reportedly be small. An official for one of Hyundai’s suppliers elaborated:

We were notified that the group plans to start mass production of the N74 in June 2026 with a schedule to manufacture only 100 units annually for two years.

If true, this will be an exclusive model to acquire if and when it hits the market, and the vehicle has a reported price tag to match – predicted to cost 500 million won (~$366,000) each.

Sources have also stated the production version of the Hyundai N Vision 74 will be faster and more powerful than the concept, utilizing a larger 70 kWh battery pack and motors that will deliver over 775 horsepower. It’s also expected to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in about three seconds.

Already being teased as the world’s first hydrogen-electric supercar, the incoming Hyundai N 74 sounds like it will be as impressive on the track as it looks parked. We will be sure to track this one as we move closer to the summer of 2026, when the new FCEV is expected to debut.
