Indiana is getting a major EV charging boost. GOEVIN (Go Electric Vehicle Indiana) just announced the recipients of its latest funding round, aimed at expanding the state’s publicly accessible EV charging network.
Over $3.3 million is being awarded to support the buildout of 36 new charging projects: 18 DC fast charger sites and 18 Level 2 charging stations. I asked Carl Lisek, executive director of Drive Clean Indiana, where the $3.3 million came from, and he told me it was “VW mitigation money.”
All of the DC fast chargers will be built along Indiana’s designated Alternative Fuel Corridors, meaning drivers will be able to plug in 24/7 at travel centers, restaurants, and shopping areas along major highways. Alternative Fuel Corridors were set up as part of the Biden administration’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program to support the installation of EV chargers at strategic locations along major national highways.
In March 2024, the Indiana Department of Transportation selected 39 sites during its first round of NEVI DC fast charging station selections. They were due to be completed this year, but the Trump administration yanked the federal NEVI funding. Interestingly, Pilot’s sites on the NEVI selection list have resurfaced on the GOEVIN list – Pilot had six DC fast charging sites on the first-round NEVI selection list, and they’re now on the GOEVIN list, along with two more from Pilot.
The Level 2 chargers will, of course, be sited in places where people park for longer stretches and are spread across both metro areas and rural communities. GOEVIN says the chosen locations are highly visible and backed by a mix of private and public investment. Right now, none of the applicants have signed contracts yet.
The list of awardees is here.
Ryan Lisek, program director at Drive Clean Indiana, said, “Indiana has already invested more than $13 billion into EV and battery manufacturing facilities, and these new charging sites will help support the next wave of Hoosier EV drivers.”
Earlier this summer, GOEVIN hit the road for its “Closing the Gap Tour,” holding community events in eight cities – Evansville, Clarksville, Indianapolis, Muncie, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, and Hammond. The tour showcased the state’s existing EV infrastructure and spotlighted local electric fleet success stories, while encouraging businesses and local governments to help fill in charging gaps across the state.
Construction on the new GOEVIN chargers is expected to kick off this fall, with all 36 projects slated to be completed by the end of 2026.
